The starting point is a solid system in which the risks are covered in advance and the safety of your employees and your contractors is guaranteed.

“The purpose of a solid contractor safety management process is to ensure continuous communication and cooperation for continual safety improvement between you and your contractors”

Process
OSOS International will (jointly) mitigate your safety risks and will reduce general and specific  liability and other potential costs that are associated with the use of contract workers. Common criteria addressed within the scope of a system include:

  • Contractor selection and qualification
  • Performance agreements
  • Day-to-day management
  • Audits
  • Field inspections
  • Training
  • Contractor safety meetings
  • Interim performance reviews
  • Post-contract evaluation
  • Continuous improvement

Advantages
The purpose of a contractor management program is to better control, centralize, qualify and monitor your workforce. As a result of implementing a contractor management program, your organization can expect to experience some, or all, of the following advantages:

  1. Overall improved health and safety performance
  2. Cost savings
  3. Better supplier/client relationships
  4. Improved business efficiency
  5. Reduced costs associated with accidents and incidents
  6. Reduced risk – continuous improvement in loss control
  7. Moving towards using leading indicators vs. lagging indicators

Auditing
Once the prequalification phase gas been finalized, the contractor will be monitored for compliance, this is a significant part of contractor management. An audit is conducted based on the services that is performed by the contractor and the risk associated with that service.

For contractors especially involved in a higher risk trade (e.g., electricians, rope access- and confined space workers) the audit is an essential part of reviewing the contractor’s safety and performance program. Many of these high-risk workers are involved in potentially life-threatening situations and must demonstrate their ability to protect employees from harmful situations.

Mitigating risks
There are two major considerations when managing contractors. First is deciding on the criteria for evaluation and second is developing an effective safety management process to evaluate these criteria. There are a number of criteria on which a contractor’s safety will be evaluated, such as historical and future trend information.
